The Expense of a Relationship

The financial cost of dating isn’t talked much about and I need to bring it to light. Y’all, relationships are expensive and I’m one second away from scamming to pay for all these dates…just kidding… but no seriously!

I have been single for the past two years, but I just recently got into a new unofficial but official situation (no titles yet). And in those two years, I’ve forgotten how expensive being with someone can actually be. I would like to think I have a good paying job and live a comfortable lifestyle. However, when you add another person into the mix, that paycheck becomes minuscule.

The beginning stages of a relationship is full of date nights and gifts. You want to spend as much time with your significant other as possible. So you’re trying new restaurants and take turns paying for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you have your own place, you now have to stack up your pantry for two because it’s no longer just you eating. Every dollar that you were used to spending on yourself, now doubles. In adulthood, $100 leave your hands as fast as $20 do, so you can only imagine how quick it vanishes.

I’m going to go out on a limb and tell you guys how much I’ve spent in the past two weeks, roughly $580! Crazy right?! So now if that’s consistent, that’s roughly $1,160 a month just on dates and/or gifts depending on what you buy. Now if your expenses already adds up to about $2000 a month and you add an extra $1,160 on top of that, then expect to be working overtime to be paying for all this. This is exactly why I advise my friends that dating and relationships is an extra expense and if you can’t afford to date, then stop pursuing a relationship.

Now I’m not saying not to date and be single, but what I’m saying is that finances plays a huge role in long term relationships. In marriages, finances are the leading causes of divorce. So you need to make sure that you are mentally prepared to take on that task. And to all my young readers, enjoy being single! Spend that money on yourself! Travel, take yourself on dates, buy yourself gifts, enjoy your own time. There is plenty of time to be with someone but rarely do we spend time and money on ourselves. Buy that Birkin bag for yourself, buy those diamond earrings, do whatever makes you happy but don’t go broke in the process.
